Is there workplace bias due to generational gaps?

On Behalf of | Aug 4, 2025 | Workplace discrimination

Workplace discrimination can take many forms. One of the more subtle yet growing issues is generational bias. With different age groups working side by side, it’s not uncommon for misunderstandings, assumptions and stereotypes to appear on the job. These age-related issues can lead to unfair treatment that goes unnoticed until it becomes a pattern.

Whether it’s dismissing younger workers as inexperienced or older employees being seen as out of touch, age-based assumptions can affect job assignments, promotions and overall respect in the workplace. If you’ve felt dismissed, passed over or excluded because of your age, you should not let it slide.

Age isn’t just a number at work

Each generation brings its own style of working, communicating and problem-solving. When those differences aren’t respected, unfair treatment can follow. Some common signs of age-related bias include:

  • Being excluded from team discussions or decisions
  • Getting passed over for roles you’re qualified for
  • Jokes or comments about your age
  • Less access to training or mentoring opportunities
  • A pattern of being left out of major projects

It’s also worth noting that age bias isn’t just something that happens to older employees. Younger professionals may be stereotyped as lazy, entitled or lacking commitment.

To protect yourself, start by keeping a record of any patterns you notice. Save emails or write down examples. Pay attention to how your work is reviewed compared to coworkers of different age groups. And if you feel safe doing so, speak with a supervisor or HR about your concerns.

If any of this sounds familiar, it might help to speak with a legal professional, as they can guide you through your options. Sometimes, clarity on whether something is fair or legal can help determine the way forward.
